For macOS · Free · Open source

Your servers,
in one window.

Tavrix puts an SSH terminal, a file manager you can drag files into, and an editor with tabs side by side. Connect, change a file, save it straight back to the server.

Version 1.7.0 · macOS, Apple Silicon and Intel · MIT license

The Tavrix window: saved sessions on the left, a file panel and a terminal in the middle, and an editor with several open files below

Everything you reach for, together

No separate SFTP client. No copy-pasting paths between windows.

Terminal

Several shells on one connection, side by side or stacked. Drag the dividers to resize. Themes, fonts and scrollback.

File manager

Click to open folders, drag files in from Finder to upload, right-click to download, rename or change permissions. Scripts stay executable.

Editor with tabs

Syntax highlighting, auto-save, and a warning if someone changed the file on the server. One click makes a script executable.

Sessions and Keychain

Save servers in folders. Passwords and key passphrases are encrypted with the macOS Keychain. Import from ~/.ssh/config.

Jump hosts and tunnels

Reach private servers through a bastion. Local, remote and SOCKS5 port forwarding from a simple form.

Snippets

Save commands you type often and insert them with a click. Nothing runs until you press Enter.

Safe by default

Server fingerprints are checked and a changed key is blocked. One network connection per session. No accounts, no telemetry.

Light

About 90 MB to download, trimmed down from a much bigger default. Comes with a quick tour and a built-in manual.

What's new in 1.7.0

  • Quick tour on first launch (8 short steps; close it any time, it will not come back by itself). Reopen from Help → Quick Tour.
  • Manual button (top right, or F1) opens the full documentation inside the app, with Open on GitHub for the same pages online. New Help menu.
  • Editor tabs: every open file has its own tab. The editor buttons are now icons with tooltips, and there is a full-screen editor (⌘⇧F, Esc to leave).
  • Resizable layout: drag any divider (sidebar, file panel, terminals, editor) and double-click to reset; show or hide the sidebar and file panel with icons (⌘B, ⌘⇧B).
  • New README with screenshots and a how-to-use guide.
  • Fixes: the editor could only grow when dragging its divider; closing all editor tabs at once could leave an empty editor; full-screen editor could stop short of the wi…

Install in three steps

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Tavrix into Applications.
  2. Open Tavrix. The first time, macOS shows a warning (see below).
  3. Click + to add your first server. A short tour starts by itself.
"Apple could not verify Tavrix…" What does that mean, and how do I open it?

Tavrix is not signed by a paid Apple Developer account, so macOS cautions you the first time you open a downloaded copy. The app is open source, and each release lists a checksum so you can verify your download.

  1. Click Done. Do not click Move to Trash.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security.
  3. Click Open Anyway next to Tavrix and enter your password.

Prefer Terminal? xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Tavrix.app

You only need to do this once per downloaded copy.

How do I check that my download is genuine?

Compare the SHA-256 shown above with your file's:

shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Tavrix-*.dmg

You can also read the source and build it yourself: build instructions.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Tavrix is open source under the MIT license. There are no accounts and no paid tier.

Does it send my data anywhere?

No telemetry, no analytics. Its only automatic network request is an anonymous check for a newer version on GitHub, which you can turn off. Passwords are encrypted with the macOS Keychain, and everything else goes only to the servers you connect to.

Windows or Linux?

Not at the moment. Tavrix is built for macOS, for both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Where do I learn how to use it?

A quick tour starts on first launch, and the Manual button inside the app opens the full documentation. The same pages are online in the manual on GitHub.

My server blocks my IP after a few minutes. Is that Tavrix?

That is usually a security rule on the server (such as fail2ban) or its provider. Tavrix uses a single connection per session, so it makes fewer connections than most tools. The manual's troubleshooting section shows how to find the cause.
